Questions To Ask A Potential Employer/School

(...before accepting a new job)

Checklist:

1. What is the address (physical location) of the school

I will actually be teaching in?

2. Will I get/do I need a work visa/ARC to work there?

3. Will you provide me a working visa or a student visa?

4. Can I be employed at your school with only a student visa?

5. What school/location will the work visa/ARC show me

as working at?

6. Do you require/keep a deposit of any kind or do you withhold

any pay when I start working? 

(Note: According to Taiwanese law this is illegal...)

7. How much is the deposit?

8. Do you realize that if you require or take a deposit, it will be

difficult for me to accept a position at this school?

9. How much do you pay foreign teachers per hour?

When/how am I paid?

10. Do you withhold taxes? At what rate?

11. Do you give bonuses? For what?

12. Do you reimburse for air travel (one way/roundtrip?)

for working at the school for 6 months/1 year?

13. Contracts - How long? Do I get paid holidays?
 
14. Plane tickets - Will the school pay/reimburse me

for 'visa runs'?

15. Can you supply me with a complete list of the rules

or expectations that you have for foreign English teachers?

16. Do you provide the teaching curriculum? Can I use my own?

17. Do you allow teaching on the computer/internet and/or

teaching in conjuction with movies/videos?

18. How many students will I have (average) per class? Can

you guarantee a maximum?

19. What techniques do you use/recommend for discipline?

20. May I speak directly with parents at any time?

21. How long have you been in business?

22. How many hours minimum/maximum can I work

at the school?

23. Do you offer private tutoring opportunities?

24. Can I teach/tutor outside of this school?

25. Are my classroom/s air conditioned?

26. Does the school supply/give me a discount on

accommodations and/or is this required? Do I receive

a single or shared apt? Furnished? A.C.?

27. Extracurricular Activities - When? How long?

Do I get paid (how much/how/when?)
