English teaching in schools

This covers all of those confusing abbreviations for teaching English abroad, including ESL , EFL, TESL, TEFL, and so on ('English as a Second Language', 'English as a Foreign Language', 'Teaching English as a Secondary Languages', 'Teaching English as a Foreign Language' respectively).

There is a strong demand for teachers in Taiwan. These jobs range from positions in high schools, to English cram schools (aka 'bushibans'), to kindergartens, to adult business schools, and more. No matter whether you want to teach in the middle of Taipei's busy city life or the serenity of Taiwan's East coast, there are a number of jobs out there waiting for you. You can pick and choose to suit your needs!

Private tutoring

Tutoring private students is very different from school teaching because you will probably have to plan your own lessons, choose your books, and then teach one on one. A lot more preparation is required but many people who have been teaching in Taiwan have found private tuition is the way to go. You are free to charge your own rates which might be twice the amount you earn an hour in a cram school, or even more! You can also pick your students and most likely gain a very close Taiwanese friend. Private tutoring is also a great way to meet a Taiwanese family and enjoy their friendly and generous hospitality. You can expect to be invited out on family trips and so on.

English isn't the only language people are in Taiwan are interested in. There are a number of foreign teachers around that teach French, Italian, German, and other languages.
