With the highest mountain in North and
South-East Asia (outside of the Himalayas) Yushan ('Mt.
Jade', 3,952m), Taiwan has excellent hiking/climbing
opportunities and many Canadians have admitted that
you'd be hard-pressed at times to tell the difference
between some mountains in Canada and Central Taiwan.
Permits are required to LEGALLY climb in certain
remote or high altitude mountainous areas of Taiwan
(including Yushan).
There
are basically two kinds of permits:
Class
B- obtainable in a few minutes at trailhead
or entrance after filling out a simple form. The police
will help you if you can't read/write Chinese. The need
for this permit is shrinking and it may be eradicated
completely very soon.
Class
A- required for climbing mountains
over 3,000m high. In addition, you need a minimum of
3 people to apply for this permit as a single permit
cannot be issued.
Present the following to the Foreign Affairs
Police in any local township police station (not a branch
police station however). You will need to show an ID
or passport, Taiwanese Driver's License or ARC. Fee
of NT$10 and can be issued on the spot.
Commercial mountain climbing clubs will make all arrangements
for you and will apply for necessary permits on your
behalf. They are usually Chinese-speaking only and take
busloads of 50-100 hikers out at a time. Overnight trips
have smaller groups typically.

If you are interested in becoming a legally
licensed mountain guide (for which you can't legally
earn money but will at least not need a guide when you
go climbing with friends for free) it is possible but
takes at least a year. For more information contact
the above mountain clubs.
