Mandarin Chinese Language Study

Mandarin Chinese ('Guoyu' in Taiwan- 'country language', 'Putonghua' on the mainland -'common language') is the main, official language of mainland China and Beijing and was also the official language of Taiwan during martial law following WWII (ending in 1987.) Mandarin Chinese is still the main language in Taiwan, but as the population integrates, it is slowly being encroached upon by the Taiwanese dialect (although many young people in Northern Taiwan speak and understand little or no Taiwanese at all.)
