Buses are a very convenient and relatively cheap way to travel anywhere in Taiwan. The long distance bus companies offer overstuffed couch chairs which are big enough for even large foreigners. Due to tight competition, tvs/dvd players, free drinks and other discounts and offers are given away in an attempt to lure customers.

Also, because all of Taiwan's major highways/freeways have toll booths, taking a bus can be considerably cheaper for long distance routes. These buses are very well air-conditioned so be prepared with at least a sweatshirt if you are going very far. Smoking is generally not allowed on any buses.

Local Bus Companies

Purchase ticket from driver. May be allowed to get off between stops by asking driver to stop.Routes are marked mostly in Chinese on maps/guides.

Long Distance Bus Companies

These buses will take you to CKS International Airport in Taoyuan.

Bus tickets cannot be purchased on the buses but must be purchased prior to boarding at respective ticket kiosks for the central stations.
